These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
